Beef Nihari Recipe

Nihari is a cuisine that originated from the Indian subcontinent, however it is more famous in Pakistan. It can be cooked using mutton, beef, or lamb and is normally prepared the day before and stored overnight to ensure that all of the spices are thoroughly mixed. I am sure you will love this flavorful recipe. In this blog I have shared with you 4 easy steps to make Nihari. So let’s get started!

Note: I have used beef in this recipe but if you don’t eat beef you can use chicken or mutton instead. Cooking time will vary accordingly.

INGREDIENTS:

  • 150 ml oil (तेल)
  • 547 gram beef 
  • Fried onions
  • 1 packet of Shan nihari masala (available in Walmart in international section)
  • 235 ml water for gravy ( पानी)
  • 490 ml of water (पानी)
  • 5-6 tbsp of roasted wheat flour
  • 352 ml of water ( for making wheat flour)

PROCESS:

Step 1 of 4: Getting started

~Take 150 ml oil in a saucepan and add 1 full packet of Shan nihari masala. After 1 minute, add beef and mix everything and cook it for 5 minutes.

~ Then add 235 ml of water and let it cook for about 5 minutes on a low flame.

~ Once cooked, take out the beef in a plate and add 490 ml of water in it.

~ Keep the 235 ml water (gravy) aside for later use.

Step 2 of 4: Making wheat flour

~ In another pan add 5-6 tbsp of wheat flour and cook it for about 3-4min. Make sure to keep stirring it so that you don’t burn the wheat flour

~ Once it gets cooked add 352 ml of water in it and make a fine paste.

~ Then add the wheat flour paste in the gravy we made earlier (235ml of water). Keep stirring while adding the flour in gravy so that it doesn’t become lumpy.

~ Lastly, add the beef and cover then pan with a lid and cook it on a slow gas. Keep checking the gravy and stir every 10 minutes till the beef gets cooked. Approximately 4-5 hours.

Step 3 of 4: Giving tempering (tadka)

~ Once beef is cooked turn off the gas and in another pan add 2tbsp oil, fried onions, 1 tbsp cumin seed, 1 tbsp Kashmiri chili powder and then cook it for about 1 minute.

~ Once it’s cooked add it in the gravy

Step 4 of 4: Garnishing

~ When serving you can add coriander, finely chopped green chilies, finely sliced ginger strips, lemon and fried onions in the gravy 

Tip– If possible make fresh fried onions for better taste.
